The French government repeatedly threatens a new lockdown, but has not yet enforced it. Instead, schools and shops are largely open. This worries epidemiologists. They fear an uncontrolled spread of the virus like in England or Portugal. The warnings of the more contagious Corona variants are not tearing from France’s scientific world. The epidemiologist Arnaud Fontanet of the Pasteur Institute warned in the newspaper „Journal du Dimanche“ that the chances of controlling its spread without a strict lockdown are low, especially with regard to the mutation, which was first discovered in Great Britain. „The English, Irish and Portuguese – certainly punished by the coincidence of the British variant with the festivities at the end of the year – did not make it.“ It is now the task of politics to mediate between health, economic and social issues.

In France there is currently a strict evening curfew from 6 p.m. People are only allowed to go outside in exceptional cases – this includes commuting to work. Restaurants, bars or cultural institutions such as museums and theaters are closed. Schools, kindergartens and retail outlets are largely open. The government has not yet announced a new lockdown expected by many. Instead, she has been threatening it for weeks because the situation is worrying. Most recently, more than 20,000 new infections per day were regularly reported. According to Fontanet, who as a member of the Scientific Council also advises the government, the variant first discovered in Great Britain will prevail in France around the beginning of March. On January 7th and 8th, she was responsible for 3.3 percent of the new infections, on January 27th for 14 percent, said the scientist, citing preliminary results of an investigation. He warns that France could be surprised by the pace of the epidemic. „Especially since there is a delay between the time action is taken and the time it takes effect.“
