Virus mutation exacerbates threat

In addition, the mutated virus variant B.1.1.7 is already rampant in Portugal. Scientists have determined that the mutation is now responsible for almost twelve percent of new infections in Portugal. It only took her five weeks to do this. The fact that B.1.1.7 is significantly more contagious than the original Sars-CoV-2 is now largely undisputed in science. With reference to a study by the British health authority PHE, Drosten said in his NDR podcast that he was assuming an approximately 35 percent higher infectivity of this variant. He confirmed this in today’s joint press conference with Health Minister Jens Spahn and RKI boss Lothar Wieler.

The Portuguese disaster is based on the mistakes of having relaxed too hesitant measures too early in combination with the spread of the coronavirus mutation B.1.1.7. The rest of Europe knows exactly what to do and what not to do in order not to get into a similar extreme situation.

Germany in a better starting position

You cannot compare the individual countries one-to-one, especially not Portugal with Germany. Because while the country in the very west of the continent at the beginning of the pandemic had a health system that was broken down as a result of the financial crisis with just 4.2 intensive care beds per 100,000 inhabitants, Germany was the EU frontrunner with 38.2 beds. In addition, there are the different economic conditions and the associated opportunities to financially cushion corona measures. Portugal may have had no choice but to try to survive the second wave with as slight restrictions as possible – and made a huge miscalculation. On Wednesday, Reuters reported that there are currently 681 people suffering from Covid-19 in Portuguese intensive care units, which means that the maximum allocation of 672 beds for corona patients has already been exceeded. A maximum of around 1000 intensive care beds would generally be available.
Portugal has to go into a tough lockdown

After all, Portugal has almost doubled capacity since the pandemic began. But it is even more important there than in Germany that the necessary qualified staff is not available to be able to provide additional intensive care beds. In order to avoid a collapse of the health system, the country ultimately had no choice but to go into a really hard lockdown, including home office duty and closed schools, which the government wanted to avoid until yesterday.
