In Spain, the parliament extended the state of emergency until May 2021. As part of the state of emergency, several regions announced that their territory would be cordoned off, including Catalonia with the metropolis of Barcelona, ​​Madrid and Cantabria. Since the end of July, a full mask has been mandatory in Spain, not only in closed public spaces, but also outdoors – except on the Canary Islands. Stricter restrictions also apply over the holidays: between December 23rd and January 6th, citizens are only allowed to leave their respective residential area in exceptional cases. During the lockdowns, however, people are still allowed to cross the regional borders for meetings with close family or friends.

The United Kingdom has one of the highest death rates in Europe due to the corona pandemic: it registered more than 55,000 deaths at the end of November. The UK is the first western country to grant emergency approval for Pfizer and Biontech’s vaccine. Vaccination of risk groups began on December 8th. Larger sections of the population will have their turn from January. Since the beginning of December, different regional regulations apply in England. The three risk levels medium, high or very high are decisive for the severity of the measures. Gastronomy has been allowed to reopen in regions with lower levels since December 3rd, subject to certain conditions. Between December 23 and 27, up to three households can come together to celebrate Christmas.
