Anne Hidalgo very popular – will France get its first female president? – today – 20-1

Biden win election 2020

She is the daughter of immigrants, a self-confessed feminist and mayor of Paris for the seventh year. Anne Hidalgo could pose a threat to Macron in the 2022 presidential election. Soon the socialist has to decide whether she wants to compete against the head of state. She is one of the most influential women in France, and some see her as the country’s first female president: Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo is highly regarded when it comes to challenging the unpopular President Emmanuel Macron. In the coming year, the socialist will have to put the cards on the table if she wants to apply for the highest office in the state in spring 2022.

61 years old, Ana María Hidalgo Aleu was born in southern Spain and is seventh year mayor of Paris – this is the profile of the politician who worked her way up from a modest immigrant family. Hidalgo has “what it takes to be president”, says the parliamentary group leader of her Socialist Party (PS), Valérie Rabault. Above all, Hidalgo could mobilize outside the traditional supporters. This is almost even more important, because since the election debacle of 2017, ex-President Francois Hollande’s party has almost disappeared into oblivion.

French President infected Macron who tested positive “shows symptoms”

That’s what the model woman Hidalgo is for. It was confirmed in June by a clear majority for a six-year term in Paris. In alliance with the Greens, she represents the socio-ecological turnaround that many are hoping for on a national level. A green oasis – this is how Hidalgo imagines the French capital. She wants to ban cars from the city, expand bicycle expressways and parks and want to create more social housing. The corona pandemic seems to prove her right: According to the national statistics office, Insée, more than one in ten of the two million Parisians – in the metropolitan area there are twelve million – fled from the virus and the narrowness of the countryside.

The biggest hurdle is called Mélenchon

When asked about a presidential candidacy, Hidalgo finally answered like the Sphinx: “I will do my part.” However, there are hurdles. The largest is called Jean-Luc Mélenchon. The 69-year-old leader of the left-wing party La France Insoumise (The Indomitable France) wants to face Macron one last time. The rumbling populist has no chances. But he could split the left camp like in the 2017 presidential election.

Judgment in the “Charlie Hebdo” trial Terror aid workers have been behind bars for a long time

Hidalgo’s alliance with the Greens is also on shaky ground – as in Germany, the party, which was strengthened in the local elections, is likely to send its own candidate into the race. “The struggle for supremacy has begun between the socialists and the Greens,” says an observer from the left. Supporters praise Hidalgo’s “resilience” and her “political talent”. The former labor inspector joined the Socialist Party in 1994 and joined the cabinet of Labor Minister Martine Aubry three years later, during the “cohabitation” of the socialist government under the conservative President Jacques Chirac.

Term of office with terrorist attacks and Corona

Her party comrade Bertrand Delanoë made Hidalgo deputy in 2001 after his election as Paris Mayor. After Delanoë’s withdrawal, the mother of two won the 2014 local elections herself. The terrorist attacks of 2015 and the sometimes violent protests of the “yellow vests” and against Macron’s pension reform took place during Hidalgo’s tenure. Most recently, the corona pandemic brought cultural life, gastronomy and tourism to a standstill.

Controversy over US subsidies tighten tariffs on German goods

Critics accuse Hidalgo of rotting the “city of love” and allowing criminal gangs to do their thing. “Paris is not clean enough,” admits the mayor. That should change by the Summer Olympics in Paris in 2024, she promises. The registers are empty, however. Would France even be ready for an avowed feminist like Hidalgo? The city of Paris has just been fined 90,000 euros by the Ministry of Administration – because it employs more women in management positions than expected. Hidalgo called this “absurd” – and announced that he would personally hand over the fine to the ministry.
