Review of Trump statements:
99 percent of US corona infections “totally harmless”

In his Independence Day speeches, the US President demonstrates another sample of his exclusive parallel world

The country is not doing really well. The high unemployment, the significant increase in corona infections and protests against racism have been dominating public discussions in the USA for several weeks. US President Trump addressed this in his two speeches on the national holiday, on July 4th, in a detached and pointed manner. They were election campaign speeches, created by Stephen Miller, who was also instrumental in the script of Trump’s spectacular inaugural speech on January 20, 2017. Similar to how others in the Trump administration chose Iran as a contrast medium for their own profiling, Miller has immigration and the cultural war against radical left as a pulse generator in the spirit of Steve Bannon. Trump’s two speeches, first on Friday at Mount Rushmore and then on Saturday in the garden of the White House, were characterized by the fact that they avoided the specific problems at hand because they did not generate any enthusiasm. Instead, the speeches should evoke a spirit that brought Trump to the White House. The old energy should be restarted in the face of bad numbers, which are also reflected in the polls that make Trump look bad. The flag of national populism was rolled out again. This can be seen, among other things, in the fact that Trump constantly speaks of a virus from China. He accepts that he is also strengthening the forces that caused 832 “anti-Asian incidents” in California in the last three weeks alone.

Warning of “radical left” and the ironing out of Covid-19 risk

Two key messages from the speeches made the rounds in the news circle yesterday: the warning against a radical left, the “Marxists, anarchists, agitators, looters and the people who in many areas have no idea what they are doing” and Trump’s ironing down of the risks by Sars-CoV-2:
Now that we’ve tested nearly 40 million people, we’re showing cases – 99 percent of which are totally harmless – and results that no other country can offer. Neither in terms of the number of tests nor their quality. It was foreseeable that this remark caused the greatest excitement. Your intention is clear, the increase in the number of infections since the reopening of the “business”, which is closely linked to Trump’s chance for re-election, must be explained away as a risk. A month ago, the number of new infections was 20,000, last Thursday it was 57,000: “The daily infections are increasing in 40 out of 50 countries,” as political opponents calculate. It is well known that assessments of the fatal risk posed by Covid-19 vary, but the audacity of the assertion that 99 percent of infections are “harmless”, which includes up to 1 percent of infected people being spared from more serious diseases, is astonishing. It wasn’t made at a party, but at a “big speech” on Independence Day.

Covid-19-related illness has been fatal for over 132,000 people in the US to date. As an absolute number, that is a lot, far more than in other countries. Downplaying these cases in a speech about the spirit of the nation is particularly bitter, especially as the US President’s recesses have method. He is concerned with masking out specific realities in the USA. If the 1,300 scientists of the World Health Organization (WHO) reached a consensus last week according to which the death rate of infected people, known as the “Infection fatality rate” (IFR), is around 0.6, this does not provide any Discharge for the US President. The determination of a reliable IFR number is in the ongoing discussion because the exact recording of the infected causes particular problems if people are to be included who are infected with the virus, but show no symptoms – taking them into it would reduce the death rate . In most cases, another variable, the “case fatality rate”, is used: the proportion of those who have died or who died in a case. Here, the known cases of infection and deaths in connection with Covid-19 are the calculation basis. For the USA, with 2,983,142 known cases of infection and 132,571 deaths in connection with Covid 19, this results in a case mortality of 4.44 percent. When it comes to the proportion of deaths per million inhabitants, the USA stands out with a value of 400. According to the Worldinfometer, it ranks high (behind Belgium, Great Britain, Spain, Italy, Sweden and France).

The US president would have to keep the situation in his country in mind when he talks about a harmless corona situation. There is an interesting contradiction to this: The case mortality will probably decrease if one adds dark cases to the picture to get to the bottom, but more tests would be needed. Trump rejects this, however, in public statements in which he claims that the numbers appear so large in the US precisely because there are so many tests, which is why he “wants to slow them down”. Is image everything?

Cutouts and Risks

According to the US health authority, there are known phenomena with Covid diseases: Difficult cases among older citizens have to be taken to hospital particularly often. For the “65-year-olds and older” it was statistically up to June 27th, 306.7 out of 100,000 in this age group and 155.0 out of 100,000 among the 50 to 64 year olds. These numbers fit just as little into Trump’s landscape painting of the “harmless corona infection” as the statement that minorities such as blacks and Latinos are particularly hard hit. According to the latest figures from the New York Times, 23 corona virus cases out of a total of 10,000 are “whites”, 62 cases are “blacks” and 73 are “Latinos”. The elderly, blacks, Latinos as well as socially and economically disadvantaged whites not only have a greater risk of disease due to their work, living conditions, the lack of health insurance, but also with unemployment, the other evil side of the corona crisis. Trump also omitted this reality in his two appearances, instead he summed up the protests among mobs who would tear down monuments and with a “cultural revolution” put down what would have been built.

The US President is now proposing a “garden with new hero statues”, while the advantages of the richer layers are cemented in the background. The trend in the pandemic aid program, the CARES Act, which expires at the end of this month, is currently to cut extraordinary unemployment benefits – an extra $ 600 a week. Instead, the focus is now more on companies so that they can bring more people into work and those who already have jobs. This will initially have exclusionary effects, but on the other hand it is feared that the well-networked companies will be able to do disproportionately more amidst the large aid package than those who are left out of Trump’s image of America: “The fewer old workers about social security and Medicare With money drawn from the state, the more these programs can be undermined and the money channeled into channels that ultimately benefit private wealth. “
