After five attempts – Hacker guesses Trump’s Twitter password

“Nobody is hacked” claimed US President Trump a few days ago with an adventurous justification. Now he is said to have been taught better himself – and not for the first time. When hackers carried out a massive attack on Twitter in July, numerous prominent accounts were affected. That of Barack Obama, for example, that of Bill Gates and that of Joe Biden. The most prominent Twitter user in the world escaped the attack: Donald Trump’s account was specially secured by Twitter, as the New York Times reported at the time. Now a Dutch IT security expert claims to have gotten the US President’s password – not through a complicated hack, but simply by guessing. Actually he expected to be blocked after the fourth unsuccessful login attempt or at least to be asked for further information, said Victor Gevers of the daily newspaper “De Volkskrant”. Instead, he could keep trying – and with “maga2020!” also promptly successful. “Maga” stands for “Make America Great Again”, Trump’s slogan in the last and also in this election campaign. Once logged in, he could read Trump’s personal messages, change his profile settings and also tweet on his behalf, writes “De Volkskrant”. Screenshots should prove this.

Instead of sending his own messages to Trump’s 87 million followers, he tried to make himself and those around him aware of the security gap, explained Gevers, who sees himself as an “ethical hacker”. But neither the White House nor the US security agencies nor Twitter reacted to this. It wasn’t until the next day that he could no longer access the account because Twitter activated so-called two-factor authentication. The owner of an account is sent an additional code that he / she has to enter when logging in. A few days later Gevers was contacted by the US Secret Service, who thanked him for the hint, writes “De Volkskrant”.

While nothing was heard from the White House about the alleged hack, Twitter has since denied the newspaper’s presentation. The network had no evidence to back up the claims, it said in a statement. For high-ranking accounts related to the US election, more extensive account security measures have been taken, said a spokesman. In fact, Twitter would have every reason to take such security precautions – especially with President Trump, who just a few days ago made the public claim that “nobody is being hacked”. His reasoning: Hackers would need an IQ of 197 and would have to know 15 percent of the password. The short video also made the rounds quickly because Trump should actually know better. In 2016, three Dutch people managed to guess the password of their Twitter account. Back then it was “yourefired”, his favorite phrase on the US show “The Apprentice”. Incidentally, one of the three successful account crackers was Victor Gevers.
