According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in ten people in the world could already have contracted the corona virus. “Our current best estimates show that around ten percent of the world’s population could already have been infected with this virus,” said WHO expert Mike Ryan in Geneva. That would correspond to an unreported number of more than 700 million undetected infections in addition to the around 35 million cases that have been detected so far. The proportion of those already infected varies depending on the country, between urban and rural populations and also according to social groups, said Ryan. Even with such a high number of unreported cases, the overwhelming majority of people worldwide are still at risk of Covid 19 disease, he emphasized. The extent to which people are immune to the pathogen for at least a while after surviving an infection has not yet been conclusively clarified.
