20 years after losing title – When boxing grandpa Foreman made history

Washington

Twenty years after the legendary “Rumble in the Jungle” when he lost his boxing title to Muhammad Ali, a 45-year-old Georgie Foreman took the heavyweight crown again 26 years ago. Thanks to a cracking right. Five months later there is a scandal against Axel Schulz. When his cracking right had been struck and brought about the premature end, George Foreman got down on his knees in the corner of his ring and looked reverently up at the gentleman. The preacher thanked God for his grace – once again. The devout boxing legend achieved something historic on November 5th, 1994 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. With his knockout win in round ten against WBA and IBF champ Michael Moorer, Foreman was not only the oldest heavyweight world champion. The 20 years that lay between losing his title and winning again are still unmatched. Back then, on October 30, 1974, in the legendary “Rumble in the Jungle” in Kinshasa, he completely unexpectedly lost his two WBC and WBA titles to boxing idol Muhammad Ali. 20 years later Foreman got the belts back. But until then, he had to work hard in a duel between two puncher. The 19 years younger and to date still undefeated Moorer had a proud record of 30 knockout victories in 35 fights, Foreman entered the ring with a fight record of 67 premature defeats in 76 fights.

Schulz loses with aftertaste

And neither gave each other anything from the start, Big George had to take numerous blows, his eyes swelled up quickly. But the old man didn’t care, despite the love handles, he was quite agile, distributed himself vigorously and thus wore down his opponent. Just five months later, George Foreman made headlines again when he won a memorable fight against the German Axel Schulz thanks to a majority decision. Quite a few had seen Schulz up front. But the judgment was made.
In 1997 Foreman ended his career after a loss to Shannon Briggs, after 81 fights with 76 wins and a knockout rate of almost 84 percent. The gentleman had meant well to the personable Texan, who was inducted into the 2003 International Boxing Hall of Fame.
