The Pfizer / Biontech vaccine against the coronavirus is already being used in the UK and the USA. Approval is imminent in the EU. But the EU is also negotiating further doses with other companies – for example with Novavax. The EU Commission is negotiating with the US company Novavax about the purchase of 100 million doses of corona vaccine. This is the seventh contract the EU plans to sign with a pharmaceutical manufacturer to secure batches of the vaccine. If the contract is successfully concluded, Europe would have more than two billion doses of vaccine available. “The planned contract with Novavax would offer the possibility to buy 100 million cans – with the option of a further 100 million cans,” said a spokesman for the EU Commission. The vaccine developed by Novavax is based on recombinant proteins and not on mRNA technology like the vaccines from Pfizer and Biontech or Moderna. According to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the corona vaccinations in the EU should start on December 27th, 28th and 29th. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) plans to issue its recommendation for approval of the vaccine from Biontech and Pfizer on Monday. If this turns out to be positive, the EU Commission wants to make a quick decision on the approval within two days.

The Netherlands have meanwhile announced that they will not start vaccinations against the coronavirus before January 8. Health Minister Hugo de Jonge said on Thursday that this was the “fastest possible plan”. After EMA approval, the country will have to take additional national steps, added de Jonge. This includes, for example, the recommendations by local authorities about the suitability of the vaccine for certain groups. In the Netherlands, too, employees in nursing homes and facilities for people with disabilities, as well as employees in the health sector, are to be vaccinated first.
