The Broncos’ search for outside linebacker help after Von Miller’s ankle injury includes veteran Clay Matthews.
“We’re always looking and especially (because) our numbers are low there now at the position,” coach Vic Fangio said before practice Thursday. “Yeah, we’re looking, but we’re not going to do something just for the sake of doing something.”
Fangio didn’t offer much on the Broncos’ talks with Matthews, who played last year for the Los Angeles Rams and has been a free agent since being released March 19.
“(General manager) John (Elway) and the guys have been looking at possibilities out there,” Fangio said. “I don’t know exactly where all that stands (with Matthews) and where it went or what happened.”
Matthews’ agent, Ryan Williams, told NFL Network that his client wants to play this year, but talks with the Broncos didn’t produce a deal.
Chubb limited. The Broncos posted their first injury report of the season in accordance with NFL rules.
Receiver Courtland Sutton was unable to finish practice because of a shoulder injury.
Not participating in the non-padded workout were Miller (who remains on the 53-man roster) and inside linebacker Mark Barron (hamstring). Barron has missed all three practices this week.
Limited were Sutton, outside linebacker Bradley Chubb (left knee), right guard Graham Glasgow (right ankle), receiver KJ Hamler (hamstring) and tight end Albert Okwuegbunam (hip).
Ojemudia improving. Rookie cornerback Michael Ojemudia, who was in the No. 3 corner competition before a quad injury derailed his camp, went through the full practice.
“He’s gotten better every day,” Fangio said. “We’ve slowly progressed him from rehab on the side (field) to individual to a few plays in practice to where he’s (now) up to taking a normal allotment of practice snaps. It’s been steady and nice (progress). He hasn’t had any potholes along the way.”
Impressed with Brown. When cornerback A.J. Bouye was with Jacksonville last year, he twice faced Titans then-rookie receiver A.J. Brown.
Brown had four catches for 135 yards and a touchdown in the Titans’ 42–30 win over the Jaguars in Week 11.
“He definitely (runs) good routes, but what stands out with him — when he gets the ball in his hands, it’s just yards after the catch,” Bouye said. “It’s hard to tackle him one-on-one. He bounces off the tackles. The teams that play him well are able to swarm around him and get him (tackled).”
