After the dispute over caricatures of the Islamic prophet Mohammed escalated, the conflict between France and Turkey intensified. The French satirical magazine “Charlie Hebdo” is now following up with a special caricature of the Turkish head of state. The French satirical newspaper “Charlie Hebdo” drew the anger of the Turkish president with the publication of a cartoon by Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Erdogan’s spokesman accused the newspaper of “cultural racism”. “We condemn the publication’s heinous efforts to spread its cultural racism and hatred,” wrote Fahrettin Altun on Twitter. “The French president’s anti-Muslim agenda is bearing fruit!” Altun continued. The caricature on the cover of the Wednesday edition of “Charlie Hebdo”, which was published online on Tuesday evening, shows Erdogan in a T-shirt and underpants, drinking a can of beer. Erdogan lifts the skirt of a veiled woman to reveal her bare bottom. “Ooh, the prophet,” says the character, while the title proclaims: “Erdogan: he’s very funny in private.”

The tension between the two heads of state was triggered by Macron’s statements in defense of freedom of expression after the Islamist attack on a teacher near Paris who showed Mohammed cartoons by “Charlie Hebdo” in his class. The French President stressed that France “will not give up caricatures and drawings”. In addition, Macron recently certified that Islam was in a “crisis”. The Turkish president called for a boycott of French goods after advising Macron to have his “state of mind checked”.

Anti-French wave of protests in Muslim countries

The dispute has now grown into an anti-French wave of protests in several Muslim countries. Chechnya President Ramzan Kadyrov compared the French head of state to a “terrorist”. Macron provokes Muslims and is gradually “looking like a terrorist himself,” wrote Kadyrov on the Telegram messenger service. “By supporting provocations, he secretly urges Muslims to commit crimes”. Macron’s statements drove more than 40,000 people onto the streets in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, according to police. The protesters called for a boycott of French goods and burned a picture of Macron. The protest was organized by Islami Andolan, one of the largest Islamist parties in the Muslim-majority country. “Macron is one of the few leaders who worship Satan,” said party representative Ataur Rahman at the rally.
