The US presidential elections were more than three weeks ago. But only now is incumbent Trump in prospect of moving out of the White House. But he names one condition. US President Donald Trump wants to leave the White House if the electoral college should appoint Democrat Joe Biden as the new US President in mid-December. “Sure I will. And you know that,” Trump said when asked whether he would leave the White House if the electoral college confirmed Biden’s victory.

The elected president added, however, that the Electoral College would make a “mistake” in the case. Trump reiterated that there was “massive fraud” in the November 3rd presidential election. The election infrastructure in the USA is like in a “third world country”, he told journalists. It would be “very hard” to admit defeat, said Trump after a video broadcast with US soldiers abroad on the occasion of the Thanksgiving holiday. It was the first time since the November 3rd election that he had asked questions from reporters. Trump said he doesn’t think it’s right that Biden is already putting together a cabinet.

In the United States, the president is not elected directly by the electorate, but by a college of electors who belong to the Electoral College. The electoral college consists of 538 voters. They will cast their votes in their states on December 14th. At least 270 of the 538 votes are required for entry into the White House. Biden has 306 voters in the November 3rd poll – Trump has 232. Despite the clear lead, Trump has refused for weeks to acknowledge his electoral defeat and claims that the election was manipulated. Electoral officials from Trump’s Republicans firmly reject the incumbent president’s accusations of fraud, and officials even spoke of the “safest election in US history”.

Biden is due to be sworn in as the new US President on January 20.
