Even if the unemployment rate fell recently, applications for unemployment benefits are increasing again. This comes at an inopportune time for US President Trump. In the ongoing corona pandemic in the USA, the number of new jobless claims remains high. In the week leading up to September 19, 870,000 people submitted a new application for unemployment benefits, the Department of Labor in Washington announced. That was an increase of 4000 compared to the previous week. Economists had expected 840,000. In August there were still more than a million new applications per week. The new applications reflect the short-term development of the labor market in the world’s largest economy. Before the corona pandemic, the number rarely exceeded 100,000 per week. The unemployment rate recently fell from a historically high 10.2 percent to 8.4 percent for August. US President Donald Trump promised an economic recovery during the election campaign. The Republican will run against Joe Biden, nominated by the US Democrats, in the November 3rd presidential election. The coronavirus pandemic is still out of control in the United States. Since it began, almost 7 million of the 330 million Americans in the United States have been infected with the Sars-CoV-2 pathogen. The death toll in the country rose above 200,000 on Tuesday. Of the 22 million jobs lost in the Corona recession, only about half have so far been regained.
